Area soccer teams ready for state

The Kenai Central boys and girls, Soldotna boys and girls, and Homer girls soccer teams begin play at the Division II state tournament today in Anchorage.

On the girls side, Homer, Kenai Central and Soldotna are all clumped on the same side of the bracket.

Homer, the No. 3 seed at 11-5-2, faces No. 6 Kenai Central (9-5-2) at 11 a.m. at West Anchorage. The Mariners defeated the Kardinals 1-0 and 2-0 in the regular season before the Kardinals notched a 1-0 victory over the Mariners in overtime Saturday in the championship game of the Peninsula Conference tournament.

Soldotna (7-7-2) earned the No. 7 seed as an at-large berth. The Stars play No. 2 Grace Christian at 5 p.m. Thursday at Service. The Stars just lost to the Grizzlies 2-0 on May 14.

On the boys side, Kenai Central and Soldotna are on the same side of the bracket.

The Kardinals, at 9-5-2, are the No. 5 seed after winning the Peninsula Conference championship Saturday. Kenai faces No. 4 Ketchikan at 9 a.m. at Eagle River. Ketchikan and Kenai played to a scoreless tie May 5 at Kenai.

The Stars, the No. 8 seed at 6-7-1 overall, face top-seeded Juneau-Douglas Yadaa.at Kale at 1 p.m. Thursday at West Anchorage. The two teams have not played this season, but share an opponent in Homer. The Mariners lost to the Crimson Bears 9-0, while the Stars beat Homer 3-0, 4-1 and 2-1 in overtime Friday.
