Birch Ridge does well on Day 1 of 2-day Alaska Junior State Championship

Birch Ridge golfers used their home course to their advantage Monday in the first day of the Alaska Junior State Championship at Birch Ridge Golf Course. The tournament concludes today with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.

Birch Ridge golfers have the lead in five of the eight divisions.

Katelin Richards leads in the girls 16-through-18, 18-hole division, Danica Schmidt leads in the girls 16-through-18, nine-hole division, Anika Richards leads in the girls 11-to-13 division, Max Dye leads in the boys 16-through-18 division, and Shane Sundberg leads in the boys 10-through-12 division.

The team competition also will be decided on the final day of play today. Coming into the Alaska Junior State Championship, the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage were tied for the team lead, with Valley just behind.
