Ode to a Garden

Unknown

I sat around all winter

Keeping the woodstove glowing

Burning wood down to the last splinter

But mostly I was waiting for the spring

I had studied catalogs and seeds

And all of the other garden weeds

So when I got started I would have everything

I watched the months go by

Waiting for the snowless sky

I studied seed catalogs every day

I was anxious to get goin’

With my plantin’ and hoein’

And finally get my order to “Burpee” on it’s way.

Now everyone was willin’

So they all got out there tillin’

And sortin’ out the seeds that they would plant

From summer squash to gerkin’

Everyone was out there workin”

There was no such thing to say as “I can’t”

Now it’s one thing to plant seeds

And another to pull weeds.

I wish I had thought of that before!

Now no matter what you do

The weeds get ahead of you

And I can’t hoe anymore

Cause my back is so sore.

Now it’s harvest time to pick ‘em

I fought the weeds but just couldn’t lick ‘em!

I look and wonder, “Where are the veggies at?”

I got a few potatoes and a handful of tomatoes

We won’t starve, but for sure, we won’t get fat!

So next year, I’ll plant the lot

In a little ole’ flower pot

I’ll set it upon my TV

As I just sit watching, day and night

From “My Three Sons” to the “Guiding Light”

No darn weeds are going t o make a fool of me!!
