Treasures. We have a lot of them this time of year. Well, any time of year really.

Fish came in the river by the hundreds of thousands! They are treasures in the freezer and in canning jars. Many recipes make for many ways to enjoy eating those fish. Some fishermen caught what they needed and then volunteered to catch more for others who need fish. That’s a double treasure because they get to enjoy catching more fish and helping those in need.

Daylight hours are diminishing now. I treasure the extra daylight we have in the summer months. We go and go and get tired but we get a lot of things done.

Gardeners coaxed and coddled their gardens along all summer. The extra sunlight proved helpful for a quick growing season. When the harvest begins, a lot of those treasures are shared with family and friends.

Speaking of family and friends, it is nice to have them come for visits. With lots of fun things to do and places to go, the get-togethers are enjoyable. We especially enjoy walking the beach looking for treasures of stones and shells. Just sitting around talking is nice too. Family can be a treasure that lasts for a lifetime and beyond.

I treasure the guests we have from out of state who take time to be in church with us. They are on vacation but they don’t take time off from worshiping the Lord.

Jesus taught about treasures on earth compared to those in heaven. Earthly treasure is temporary and subject to loss while heavenly treasure is forever. Jesus made a connection between our hearts and treasure; “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” He urged us to lay up treasure in heaven.

Jesus told a story of a man finding a treasure in a field. He joyfully liquidated all he had in order to buy that field to obtain the treasure. Jesus likened that to finding treasure in the kingdom of God. It is worth everything.

Moses was raised in the palace in Egypt. Privilege and power were his to enjoy. Yet he weighed the treasures of Egypt against the calling of God. He chose the Lord because he recognized the pleasures of sin were only for a season. With that choice he entered a time of miracles and wonders in his later life that the LORD did for him and the Hebrews. He said the LORD opened “his good treasure.”

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth about the power of the Gospel. He emphasized the light of God that can shine in our hearts. He added, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” That is a treasure we can access again and again. The excellent power of Jesus Christ can be working in our favor.

The Bible says the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hid in Christ. These spiritual treasures are available to us in prayer and seeking the Lord. Don’t hesitate to access those treasures day and night.
