Peninsula squads get state basketball bracket assignments

The seven basketball teams from the Kenai Peninsula that qualified for state learned their bracket assignments Sunday.
The Kenai girls and boys, and Homer boys, will play at the Class 3A state tournament from March 19 to 22 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
In the boys bracket, the Kardinals got the No. 6 seed, while the Mariners got the No. 7 seed.
Kenai opens Wednesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. against No. 3 Mt. Edgecumbe. Homer tips off the tournament by playing No. 2 Sitka at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
In the girls bracket, the Kards got the No. 5 seed. Kenai plays No. 4 Valdez at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The Class 2A tournament will be from Thursday to Saturday, March 13 to March 15, at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seward boys got the No. 4 seed and face No. 5 Wrangell on Thursday, March 13, at 9:30 a.m.
The Seward girls got the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 Cordova at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13.
The Class 1A tournament has 16 teams and runs from Wednesday to Saturday, March 12 to 15, at the Alaska Airlines Center.
In order to win the tournament, a team must win four straight games.
The Cook Inlet Academy boys got the No. 2 seed and open with No. 15 Scammon Bay at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Shaktoolik, which has the No. 1 seed, has defeated CIA twice this season.
The Eagles girls got the No. 16 seed and open with No. 1 Fort Yukon at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
