Sunday: Miners nip Oilers

The Peninsula Oilers lost 2-1 to the Mat-Su Miners in Alaska Baseball League play Sunday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

The Oilers dropped to 3-5 on a nine-game, eight-day road trip.

That trip concludes Monday, when Peninsula travels to Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak to take on the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks at 6 p.m.

The Anchorage Bucs lead the league at 14-6, while the Miners are next at 12-9. The Oilers are third at 11-11, while the Anchorage Glacier Pilots are fourth at 9-15 and the Chinooks are fifth at 7-12.

Sunday was a battle between the pitching staffs.

Eddie Leon gave up two runs on six hits in a seven-inning start for the Oilers. Leon struck out one. Cameron Teper came through with a perfect inning of relief.

Jack Hostetler gave up one run on four hits in seven innings for the Miners. Hostetler didn’t walk a batter and struck out 12. Luke Smith and Drew Koenen each had a scoreless inning of relief.

In the third inning, the Oilers grabbed a 1-0 lead when Colin Robson doubled to score Cole Dawson.

The Miners answered in the fourth when Christian Perez cracked a two-run home run to also score Kyle McCausland.

Petey Soto had two hits for the Oilers, while Cody New and Aidan Sullivan added hits.
