Former Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey on Thursday pulled his name from the list of candidates running for a seat on the Homer Electric Association Board of Directors, according to a statement. He was running against Daniel Furlong for District 2, which represents Soldotna, Sterling and Kasilof.

In the statement, Carey said he’s stepping down to dedicate his time to a Christian men’s group.

“I apologize for having a petition filled out, and then filing for election and then deciding not to run,” he said in the statement. “HEA is a most important organization providing life-giving services to its members and having wonderful employees.”

Daniel Hyman, Summer Lazenby and Wayne H. Ogle are running for the District 1 seat. Troy Jones, Lonnie Lambert, Erin McKittrick and Douglas Stark are running in District 3.

Furlong is now the only candidate for District 2.

Ballots will be mailed to HEA members on April 4, and must be received no later than 5 p.m. on May 3 to count in the election.
