4-H expo to kick off in Soldotna on Friday

Kids on the peninsula are making sure their projects and livestock are ready for the Kenai Peninsula 4-H Agricultural Expo, which begins at the Soldotna Sports Center on Friday and continues through the weekend.

Cassandra Rankin, the Kenai Peninsula 4-H program coordinator, said the kids are excited to share their projects for the community after months of hard work.

“These kids work hard in 4-H all year,” she said.

Depending on the project, a lot of kids have been raising animals for around five or six months.

The expo begins at the sports center on Friday with small livestock shows from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and large stock from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Round Robin show will be at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Saturday the livestock auction begins at noon.

Sunday, for the first time, Rankin said, there will be a horse show at the Soldotna Rodeo Grounds from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Back at the sports center, there will also be a 4-H petting zoo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Daily admission is $4 and a weekend pass is $6. Kids five years and younger had free admission.

The expo was previously held in Ninilchik, but the Soldotna City Council voted to relocate the event at a meeting in December.

“This is the very first time we’re up here in Soldotna,” Rankin said.

Additionally, different learning sessions will be available throughout the expo. Rankin said topics range from livestock care to landscaping.

“We expect it to be an overall family-fun event that shines light on agriculture,” Rankin said.
