Alaskans living above the 60 North Latitude line, including all portions of the Sterling Highway, are allowed to keep their studded tires on through May 15 following an emergency order issued by the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

The order was issued by DPS Commissioner Jim Cockrell, who was appointed by Gov. Mike Dunleavy in Kenai on Tuesday, in response to extended winter conditions across the state.

Latitude 60 crosses Alaska from east to west south of Seward.
