HEA to raise rates in 2021

The Homer Electric Association members should expect to pay a little extra on their electricity bills in the new year, according to a Tuesday, Dec. 28 press release from HEA.

HEA has filed a request with the Regulatory Commission of Alaska to change its Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA) from $0.08067 cents per kilowatt-hour to $0.08432 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The Cost of Power Adjustment reflects the price of the fuel purchased by HEA to generate electricity and is adjusted on a quarterly basis. Last quarter the rate was decreased from $0.08113 cents down to its current rate.

If approved, the latest cost adjustment will mean an estimated increase of about $2 on a utility bill for a house that uses 550-kilowatt hours per month.

The additional rate change is set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2021, pending approval from the RCA.
