Seward leads peninsula at Grizzly Invite

The Seward volleyball team led the Kenai Peninsula by finishing fourth in the Platinum Bracket in the Grizzly Invitational in Anchorage.

In Friday’s pool play, Bartlett won Pool A at 7-0 while Wasilla won Pool B at 7-0. In Pool A, Nikiski was 4-3, Homer was 2-5 and Kenai was 1-6. In Pool B, Seward was 5-2.

Seward moved into the Platinum Bracket on Saturday and finished fourth in that bracket. Seward started with a 25-14 and 25-22 loss to Palmer, but then came back to beat Valdez 25-20, 8-25 and 7-3. Seward then lost to Mt. Edgecumbe 25-21, 24-19 and 5-2.

Nikiski took second in the gold bracket. The Bulldogs started by topping Monroe Catholic 25-12 and 25-23. Nikiski then lost to Kotzebue 25-21 and 25-22. Nikiski defeated Homer 25-18 and 25-9 before falling to Kotzebue 18-25, 25-23 and 15-11.

Homer was third in the gold bracket. The Mariners started by losing to Monroe Catholic 25-23 and 19-16, but then scored a big win over Grace Christian 22-25, 25-21 and 5-2. Homer then topped Houston 25-22 and 25-14 before losing to Nikiski 25-18 and 25-9.

Kenai took second in the silver bracket. The Kards started the day by defeating Anchorage Christian Schools 25-19, 23-20 and 5-3, then lost to Sitka 25-15 and 25-17.

Kenai then defeated ACS again 25-16 and 25-21 before falling to Sitka 25-21 and 25-15.
