Published 10:42 am Saturday, July 19, 2014

The Peninsula Oilers got their Scouting Showcase weekend off to a slow start, losing to the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks 7-4 Friday afternoon at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Oilers (9-17, 18-19-2 overall) outhit the Chinooks 12-10, but Chugiak scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 3-all tie.

Jonathan Popadics, who ended a great day by batting 3 for 4 with a run, began the inning with a double, followed by a walk for Steven Karkenny and a single by Steven Pollex that loaded the bases. Jackson

Cramer then walked to score Popadics and the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, Mitchel Daugharty hit James Nevant with a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring another run, and Mark Lindsay’s single brought home Pollex and Cramer.

Nick Rogowski batted in Nick Thurman for the Oiler’s first run in the second inning, hitting a 2-out single, but Rogowski caught stealing second to end the inning.

Alex Rubanowitz then got the third inning off to a good start with a single that brought Josh Rose home. Ethan McGill followed that up with a single of his own that brought Jake Sandlin in to score.

In the sixth inning, Gabriel Munoz knocked out an RBI single, but that would be all Peninsula could muster.

Daniel Przeniczny (1-4) won his first game as pitcher, going two innings with zero runs on two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Lance Phillips threw the final inning for the save with a single hit.

Dan Kolodin (1-2) recorded the loss for the Oilers, tossing two innings with two runs (one earned) given up with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Scott Torrey got the start for two innings, giving up one run on four hits, no walks and one strikeout.

Jake Sandlin batted 3 for 4 with a run, and Ethan McGill was 2 for 3 with a run and RBI.

The Oilers will face the red-hot Alaska Goldpanners Saturday at 4 p.m. at Mulcahy Field in Anchorage.
