Neurofeedback therapy for children and adults offers an effective, alternative to traditional treatment

For many people struggling with ADHD, poor focus, insomnia or emotional dysregulation, the path forward has typically involved medication.

A Kenai-based mental health organization is offering an evidence-based alternative – one that can work alongside existing treatment or serve as a standalone option.

ND Systems Mental Health and Counseling has expanded its services at its Kenai location to include neurofeedback therapy, a non-invasive treatment that uses real-time monitoring of brainwave activity to help individuals retrain how their brain functions.

Drawing on more than 17 years of experience serving Alaskans, the organization is one of the few providers in the region offering this service – and notably, one of the only ones extending it to children.

“We are so out of sync in today’s world,” says Jordana Armstrong, BSc Psych, Director of Marketing at ND Systems. “Neurofeedback helps the brain regulate – and the changes it creates are sustainable and permanent.”

During a session, sensors are placed on the forehead or scalp to measure brain activity through an electroencephalogram, or EEG. That data is displayed visually or through audio cues and patients are guided through tasks or games designed to balance overactive or underactive areas of the brain.

Over time, the brain learns to regulate itself without the equipment.

For younger children who may have difficulty sitting still, ND Systems uses a two-step process that begins with a system called HEG – a more gentle introduction that is easier to wear and less sensitive to movement.

As children build tolerance and early results begin to emerge, they transition to the full EEG system.

The therapy is considered a Level 1 evidence-based treatment and is identified by the American Academy of Pediatrics to be as effective as medication treatments for ADHD in both youth and adults. Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes and treatment length varies depending on what is being addressed – some patients complete care in fewer sessions, while others may benefit from up to 60 appointments.

Insurance coverage and direct billing are available.

ND Systems currently has full availability at its Kenai office, with little to no wait time and a thorough intake assessment to ensure neurofeedback is the right fit.

All practitioners can support the process, with Tara Duncan, RN leading treatment sessions directly.

For those seeking support, the process begins simply by calling 907-374-0852, starting the conversation and working with a team ready to help guide the next step forward.
