A Sterling woman faces 14 felony counts for forgery, theft and fraud after allegedly stealing blank checks from her employer and cashing them for thousands of dollars.

Shay L. Harju-Romey, 19, is accused of stealing six checks from Lea’s Boutique and Alaska Redfish Lodge in Soldotna and cashing them for approximately $2,900 at Fred Meyer, according to an Alaska State Trooper affidavit filed with the court. The checks were reported missing by the manager of the store on Thursday afternoon.

Troopers reported that video surveillance showed Harju-Romey cashing a check at Fred Meyer. The checks, which bore Harju-Romey’s name and signature, were cashed between May 31 and June 25, according to the affidavit.

Harju-Romey faces six counts of first-degree forgery, a class B felony; seven counts of second-degree theft, a class C felony; and one count of fraudulent use of access device, a class C felony.
