Seniors will be able to use the indoor walking track at the Soldotna Field House for free through a sponsorship by Central Peninsula Hospital.
Through June 2027, seniors aged 65 and older will be able to use the field house walking track from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon under the partnership, according to a Wednesday release from the hospital. The field house opens Aug. 16. Free morning walks will be available through June 30 of 2027.
“Supporting wellness outside the walls of the hospital is essential to keeping our community strong,” says Shaun Keef, CEO of Central Peninsula Hospital, in the release. “This partnership with the City of Soldotna is a meaningful way to live out our mission of nurturing the community by promoting health and wellness. By increasing access to movement and connection for seniors, we’re helping improve lives — one step at a time.”
The release says that “even short walks” are beneficial to heart health, reduce stress, strengthen bones and support mental well being. “Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay healthy,” the release says, and seniors “should aim” for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.
The field house, the release says, is a climate-controlled environment that can facilitate access to that exercise, rain or shine.
“We’re proud to partner with Central Peninsula Hospital to provide free access to the walking track for seniors 65 and over,” says Soldotna City Manager Janette Bower in the release. “This collaboration promotes healthy, active living and offers a welcoming space for seniors to stay connected — both physically and socially. It’s a great example of how working together can enhance quality of life across the Peninsula.”
A grand opening for the Soldotna Field House is scheduled for Aug. 16.
