Restore campaign finance limits
The League of Women Voters of Alaska, a nonpartisan organization, doesn’t support or oppose candidates or parties, but we do take positions on issues after reaching consensus based on careful and extensive study.
We are supportive of Ballot Measure 1, which will be on Alaska’s primary election ballot, and restores campaign finance limits in Alaska. The initiative will allow individuals to compete more equitably for public office.
Some of Alaska’s prior campaign contribution limits were struck down in 2021 by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled they were too low and without an inflation adjustment component.
After the ruling, an individual could make unlimited contributions to candidates and groups, which meant the possibility of an unfair impact on a race outcome. BallotMeasure 1 puts guardrails and limitations on donations to in-state candidates.

Voters must demand answers
So why is it the wealthy are so opposed to paying taxes but have no problem throwing millions of dollars to campaign funding to get candidates elected who will protect their interests?
All the while they and their business interest have no problem using the infrastructure which is paid for by you and I. Many of the social services that have been put in place by our government are being destroyed by the current administration as those in office continue to enrich themselvess and ignore the needs of the average American.
If we don’t hold their feet to the fire, we will suffer and continue to be ignored even as we pay to fight wars in the Middle East, build ballrooms, tear down sections of our White House, and have our voting rights challenged and possibly even have our vote thrown out.
For those not following what our government is involved in you should be doing some research and questioning your representatives as to how they are working for the citizens who elected them to office. I for one will continue to contact these representatives and question their actions. We all need to be more aggressive with our questioning and demand answers. Mid terms are important so we all need to make sure our questions are addressed and those elected are working for the betterment of the citizens who elected them.
