4.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Cook Inlet

Kenai Peninsula residents felt a jolt just before midnight on Monday.

At approximately 11:24 p.m. on July 11, a 4.7 preliminary magnitude earthquake struck Cook Inlet approximately 23 miles northeast of Nikiski and 9 miles southeast of Tyonek, according to initial estimates from the Alaska Earthquake Center. The earthquake struck at a depth of 31.7 miles, according to the center’s estimates.

The center also on Monday reported at approximately 6:58 p.m. a 4.3 magnitude earthquake 14 miles southeast of Moose Pass. The quake, which struck at the depth of 18.7 miles, was felt throughout Seward, Anchorage and the Matanuska-Sustina valley, the center reported.
