Borough honors July as Parks and Recreation Month

Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce officially proclaimed July 2021 “Parks and Recreation Month” during a Tuesday meeting of the borough assembly.

Among other things, the proclamation acknowledges the role parks and recreation play in the quality of life of borough residents and encourages citizens to enjoy recreational opportunities in the borough, such as parks, trails and open spaces.

“Parks and recreation programs build healthy, active communities that aid in the prevention of chronic disease, provide therapeutic recreation services for those who are mentally or physically disabled, and also improve the mental and emotional health of all citizens,” the proclamation says.

The proclamation is similar to action taken at the federal level, where Parks and Recreation Month has been observed annually since 1985.

Pierce presented the proclamation to Kenai Peninsula Borough Recreation Supervisor Jackie Cason during the assembly’s Tuesday meeting and praised the work of Borough Recreation Director Rachel Parra’s team.

“Her and her team … do an exceptional job of delivering a high standard and quality of services from the center there,” Pierce said.
