Wednesday baseball: Soldotna defeats Homer

The visiting Soldotna baseball team defeated Homer 12-0 in Northern Lights Conference action Wednesday.

The Stars move to 4-2 in the NLC and 6-4 overall, while the Mariners drop to 1-5 and 1-5.

Derrick Jones and Levi Mickelson combined on the shutout for Soldotna. Jones worked the first six innings, giving up just two hits while whiffing 10 and walking a pair. Mickelson finished with a hitless inning, walking one and striking out one.

Jones was 2 for 5 to help his own cause, while Mickelson was 3 for 3 with three runs. Also for the Stars, Andrew Pieh was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, Evan Appelhans was 3 for 5 with two runs and four RBIs and Sage Cruz was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

The Mariners did much better on pitching and defense than in a 20-5 loss in two innings to Kenai on Tuesday. Mylan Johnson went 5 2-3 innings, giving up nine runs — seven earned — on 12 hits while walking four and striking out three. Preston Stanislaw gave up three runs on three hits in 1 1-3 innings.

CJ Burns and Brock Barth had the hits for Homer.
