Thursday prep hockey: South topples Kenai

The South hockey team defeated Kenai Central 7-4 on Thursday in nonconference action at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The Wolverines, a Division I club, came from behind twice to avenge a loss earlier in the season to the Division I Kardinals (9-6 overall).

The Kards quickly jumped out front in the first period on a goal by William Howard, but tallies by Gordon Jennings and Chase Mascelli had South up 2-1 at the first break.

By the time 9:38 was left in the second period, Kenai led 3-2 after goals by Howard and Levi Mese.

South then put together four unanswered goals that decided the game. Devin Berg, Alex Green and Carson Lake scored in the second period, while John Lamantia scored in the third period.

Avery Martin then had a goal for Kenai, while Mascelli scored late for South.

Noah Nevin stopped 14 for the Wolverines, while Seanna Swanson saved 10 of 14 for Kenai, and Evyn Witt stopped 10 of 13.

South plays Soldotna on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex, then plays Kenai at noon Saturday at the Multi-Purpose Facility.
