Thursday hoops roundup: Homer girls, boys open Winter Carnival with victories

The Homer girls and boys basketball teams opened up play at the Winter Carnival on Thursday with victories. The Seward girls and Bethel boys also collected wins.

The Homer girls opened up with a 41-39 victory over Kodiak to move to 3-11 overall.

Homer led 9-7 after a quarter but trailed 21-17 at the half and 29-25 after three quarters.

For Homer, Keagan Niebuhr had 17 and Channing Lowney had 12. Also, Madalyn Miotke had 5, Abby Ostrom, Stella Condon and Emily Stafford had 2, and Kylee Akee had 1.

For Kodiak, Mizzy Arbues had 18 and Bea Fangonilo had 14 to lead the way.

The Homer boys defeated Ninilchik 54-47. The Wolverines already own two victories over the Mariners this season.

Homer is 4-8, while Ninilchik is 9-7.

The Mariners led 16-8 after a quarter, 30-22 at the half and 47-35 after three quarters.

Henry Wedvik had 14 for Homer, while Spencer Dye and Einar Pederson each had 13. Also, Ben Engebretsen and Preston Stanislaw had 6, and Jamen Anderson had 2.

For the Wolverines, Kade McCorison pumped in 34, while Maxx Russell had 7, Onyx Allen had 3, Holdon Cameron had 2 and Andon McCorison had 1.

The Seward girls topped Bethel 41-31 to win their 11th straight and move to 11-2.

For Seward, Mikinley Williams had 11, Lia Shank had 10, Ava Jagielski had 9, Addison Lemme had 6 and Natalie Sieminski had 5.

The Bethel boys notched a 57-54 victory over Seward. The Seahawks fell to 6-7.

For the Seahawks, Jack Lindquist had 15, Emerson Cross had 11, Noah Price had 10, Lane Petersen had 7, Talon Lemme had 6, Jake Elhard had 4 and Van Shank had 2.

Friday at the tourney, the Kodiak girls play Seward at 3 p.m., the Ninilchik boys play Seward at 4:30 p.m., the Bethel girls play Homer at 6 p.m. and the Bethel boys play Homer at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, the Bethel girls play Kodiak at noon, the Bethel boys play Ninilchik at 1:30 p.m., the Seward girls play Homer at 3 p.m. and the Seward boys play Homer at 4:30 p.m.

Nenana Invitational Tournament

The Cook Inlet Academy boys won and the CIA girls lost Thursday in the opening round of the Nenana Invitational Tournament.

The Eagles lost 62-10 to Minto to fall to 7-6 overall. CIA will play Effie Kokrine on Friday at 8 a.m. in the fourth-place bracket.

The Eagles boys topped Minto 75-51 to move to 13-4 overall.

For CIA, Ian McGarry had 32, Alek McGarry had 24, Brandt Rollman had 9, Matthew Phillips had 6 and Lucas Oyoumick had 4.

Leading the way in double figures for Minto were Nicholas Roberts with 20, Asher Titus with 17 and Warren Clarke with 10.

The Eagles play Effie Kokrine in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday.
