Thursday hockey: Peninsula squads take losses in Valley

The Houston hockey team defeated Kenai Central 6-3 on Thursday in nonconference action in Wasilla.

The Kardinals, with the loss to the defending Division II state champs, fall to 9-8-0 overall.

Kenai grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Everett Chamberlain and Avery Martin.

The Hawks then stormed back with four unanswered goals, with two coming from Daniel Matveev , and John Natekin and Andrey Efimov also scoring.

With just 49 seconds left in the second period, Logan Mese cut it to 4-3.

The Hawks then salted away the victory in the third period, with Zasim Konev scoring, then Matveev completing his hat trick.

Evyn Witt had 45 saves for the Kardinals, while Dylan Shaffer stopped 24 for the Hawks.

Kenai plays at Palmer at 7 p.m. Friday.

The host Warriors thwarted a Soldotna comeback Thursday in nonconference action. Soldotna fell to 8-9-2.

Wasilla jumped to a 3-1 lead after the first period. Robert Mikulecky, Dylan Mead and Kaleb Rehak scored for Wasilla, while Draiden Mullican lit the lamp for the Stars.

After a scoreless second period, the Stars marched back in the third period. Noah Crabtree scored just 40 seconds in, then Marshall DeRaeve tied it with 8:59 left.

But just 58 seconds later, Karson McGrew put the Warriors out front for good.

Braeden Willis stopped 21 for Wasilla, while Brycen Clyde made 24 saves for the Stars.

Soldotna plays at Colony at 7 p.m. Friday, then at Palmer at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The host Moose stayed undefeated in the Northern Lights Conference on Thursday by dropping the Mariners to 1-6 in the league and 1-11 overall.

Homer’s goal was an unassisted strike from Walden Krazeski. Reace Brothers stopped 37 for Homer, while Kai Curl had 14 saves for the Moose.
