Thursday baseball: Soldotna, Homer pick up wins

The visiting Soldotna baseball team defeated Wasilla 8-5 on Thursday in nonconference action.

The Stars moved to 3-7-2 overall. Saturday, the teams had met in the third place game of the Buddy Dale Invitational in Wasilla, and played to a 5-all tie.

The Stars had an 8-0 lead after six innings, then Wasilla struck for five in the seventh.

Colby Sturman had a big day for the Stars. On the mound, he went five shutout innings, giving up two hits and walking three while striking out eight. At the plate, he was 3 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.

Soldotna banged out nine hits and also walked 10 times. Matthew Schilling and Brenden Theel each walked twice and scored two runs. Jack Harper walked twice and had two RBIs.

Also for the Stars, Brett Hostetler was 2 for 3 with a run and three RBIs.

Homer 5, Kodiak 1

The host Mariners won their Northern Lights Conference opener to move to 6-2 overall.

After an off outing against Kenai Central on April 25, Henry Wedvik was back in control on the mound for the Mariners. Wedvik went five innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits while striking out 12 and walking four.

The Mariners led 3-1 after five innings. Clyde Clemens held that lead for Homer by pitching two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out four.

The Mariners were able to put together the five runs despite three hits, though they were patient enough for 13 walks. Preston Stanislaw walked three times, while Jayden Sims, Weston Marley and Jamen Anderson all walked twice. Sims scored two runs.
