Soldotna hockey topples Homer in Carlin Cup

The Soldotna hockey team defeated Homer 10-0 in the 2nd annual Carlin Cup on Tuesday at Kevin Bell Ice Arena in Homer.

The Stars improve to 6-5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Lights Conference, while the Mariners fall to 0-6 and 0-1.

Soldotna also stays undefeated in the Carlin Cup.

The Carlin Cup is named for John Carlin, who coached hockey at Soldotna for nearly 10 years in the 1990s, and then coached at Homer from 2013 to 2016.

Carlin, who is fighting pancreatic cancer, participated in a ceremonial puck drop before the game, and also gave a short speech after the game.

The game is a fundraiser for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, or PanCAN.

Homer assistant Matt Stineff texted that players wear purple socks and the fans wear purple. Stineff also wrote that $1,500 was raised for PanCAN.

The game was called with 6:08 left in the third period when the number of fighting penalties dished out grew to six — three for each side.

Soldotna took command of the game in the first period on goals from Marshall DeRaeve and Paul Wertanen, and a power-play tally from Daniel Heath.

The Stars scored four more goals in the second period. Sylas Hughes, Heath, Payton Williams and Draiden Mullican had the tallies.

All of the third-period goals came on the power play — from Nathan Hawkins, Riley Cronin and Mullican.

Reace Brothers had 23 saves for the Mariners. Brycen Clyde made five saves in the first two periods for Soldotna, while Fynley Holkko played the third period for SoHi and was not called upon to make a save.

Soldotna travels to Juneau-Douglas: Yadaa.at Kale for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday and 3:30 p.m. game Saturday.

Homer hosts Kodiak at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
