Saturday: South completes 3-0 trip to peninsula by topping Kenai

The South hockey team finished a 3-0 trip to the Kenai Peninsula with an 8-6 nonconference victory over Kenai Central on Saturday at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The Division I Wolverines improve to 9-4-1, while the Division II Kardinals fall to 9-7.

South had to survive a four-goal effort from Logan Mese to get the victory.

Mese scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to spot the Kards a 2-0 lead, but Chase Mascelli made it 2-1.

Avery Martin put Kenai up 3-1, John Lamantia answered for South, then Mese gave Kenai a 4-2 advantage headed to the first break.

Lamantia got it back to 4-3 early in the second period before Mese restored the cushion by scoring again. Vance Schmidt and Eli Hanneman then scored for South for a 5-all game headed to the final frame.

Everett Chamberlain put the Kards up with 10:32 to play, but South, despite playing a third game in three days, scored three unanswered to win it. Brady Adkins, Carson Lake and Hanneman had the goals.

Noah Nevin made 27 saves for South, while Seanna Swanson stopped 21 for the Kards.
