Saturday hoops roundup: Redington boys, Kotzebue girls win Hitchcock tourney

The Redington boys and Kotzebue girls won the 36th Annual Rus Hitchcock Nikiski Tip Off Tournament on Saturday. The Dimond JV boys and Nikiski girls finished second.

The Nikiski girls toppled Redington 52-12 to move to 2-6 overall.

Abby White and Avery Ellis had 11 for the Bulldogs, while Blakely Jorgensen had 10, Madison Iyatunguk had 8, Kailey Stynsberg had 5, Addison Perkins had 3, and Folesha Anderson and Natalie Huntsman each had 2.

For the Huskies, Abi Dogomos had 6, Sonia Gerike had 5 and Caydence Nunley had 1.

The Redington boys defeated Nikiski 45-33 to drop the Bulldogs to 0-8 overall.

Kameron Bird dropped in 13 for the Bulldogs, while Ethan Ellis and Lynn Deveer had 5, Carter Eiter had 3, Dylan Hall, Ryder Maguire and Shane Hall had 2, and Kevin Love had 1.

For the Huskies, Kaedon Saxton had 19, Ikaia Flores had 10, Aidan Dobbs had 6, Christian Ingraham and Silas Conner had 3, and Jake Murdock and Natan Fields had 2.

The Kotzebue girls topped Ninilchik 57-17 as the Wolverines fell to 2-6 overall.

Lucy Reynolds had 6 for Ninilchik, while Kate Hendryx had 4, Caelis Cress and Bella Berger had 3, and Lily Berger had 1.

For Kotzebue, McKenzie Swanson had 15, Elizabeth Brown had 13, Caliana Brown had 10, Xiimara Salazar had 7, Pauline McCall and Mylie McConnell had 4, and Kirra Salazar and Melina Garcia had 2.

Also Saturday, the Dimond JV boys topped Kotzebue 72-63.

The boys all-tournament team was MVP Ayden Wesley of Kotzebue as well as Kameron Bird of Nikiski, Jace Christophersen of Dimond, Kaedon Sexton of Redington, Pius Hajdukovich of Dimond and Ryder Maguire of Nikiski.

The girls all-tournament team was MVP Elizabeth Brown of Kotzebue as well as McKenzie Swanson of Kotzebue, Blakeley Jorgensen of Nikiski, Kailey Stynsberg of Nikiski, Janessa Gubler of Redington and Ari Collini of Redington.

The Scrappy Award, given because Rus Hitchcock loved scrappy players, went to Bird of Nikiski and Swanson of Kotzebue.

The free-throw champs were Braden Pili of Dimond and Pauline McCall of Kotzebue. The 3-point champs were Jake Aljibe of Dimond and Xiimara Salazar of Kotzebue. The Nikiski girls and boys won the hot shot competition. Bird and Kotzebue’s Mylie McConnell won the post-up player competition.

Tri-Valley Winter Classic

The Cook Inlet Academy boys won the third-place game Saturday at the Tri-Valley Winter Classic, while the CIA girls lost the third-place game.

The Eagles boys defeated Minto 80-59 to move to 8-3 overall. For the Eagles, Ian McGarry had 16, Brandt Rollman had 15, Matthew Phillips had 12, Owen Braband had 11, Jonas Oyoumick and Zach Armstrong had 10 and Lucas Oyoumick had 3.

The CIA girls lost to Minto 49-46 to fall to 6-4. Ella Rollman had 25, while Sophie Rozak had 10, Beka Dillingham had 6 and Clara Warren had 5.

Kenai girls 63, Houston 27

The visiting Kardinals moved to 6-6 overall with the nonconference victory Saturday.

For the Kardinals, Bryleigh Williams had 16, Willow Graham had 13, McKenzie Spence had 12, Savannah Hershberger had 6, Evelyn Cooper and Jenica Andersen had 4, Ellsi Miller had 3, Kaylauna Gump and Hallie Songer had 2, and Gracee Every had 1.

Barrow boys 47, Kenai 37

The visiting Kardinals took a Saturday nonconference loss to the Whalers on Saturday to fall to 5-5 overall.

Reid Titus, Miles Metteer and Caleb Litke all had 9 for the Kardinals, while Carter Felchle had 6 and Mason Tunseth added 4.

Donlin Gold Invitational

The Seward girls won the Donlin Gold Invitational in Bethel on Saturday by finishing 3-0, while the Seward boys were second with a 2-1 record.

The Seward girls are 6-2 overall after topping Bethel 39-33. Lia Shank had 15 for the Seahawks, while Ava Jagielski had 9, Mikinley Williams had 5, and Natalie Sieminski and Grace Fleming each had 4.

For the Warriors, Briella Herron and Kyana Harpak each had 11, while Malinda Simon and Maelynn Fredericks had 2.

The Seward boys are 4-4 after a 54-42 loss to the Warriors. Emerson Cross had 16 for Seward, while Talon Lemme had 9, Noah Price had 6 and Lane Peterson had 3.

For Bethel, Kenneth Fox had 13, Jackson Iverson had 11, Mason Berlin had 10, Ethan Wheeler had 9, Madden Cockroft had 7 and George Lee had 2.

Grace Christian girls 67, Homer 23

The host Grizzlies notched a Peninsula Conference victory Saturday to drop the Mariners to 0-1 in the league and 1-6 overall.

For Homer, Mally Im had 8, Channing Lowney and Madalyn Miotke had 6, and Abby Ostrom had 3.
