Saturday hoops: Lumen’s victory over Seward boys puts Southern Conference even more up for grabs

The host Lumen Christi boys defeated Seward 49-42 on Saturday to throw even more intrigue into an already interesting boys side of the Southern Conference.

The Seahawks are now 5-3 in the league and 12-11 overall. Seward, Susitna Valley and Ninilchik have traded victories at the top of the conference all season and will battle for the two Class 2A state berths available at the conference tournament at Lumen Christi later this week, but Lumen Christi showed it must be in that conversation, and Unalaska isn’t far behind.

For Seward, Talon Lemme had 10, Van Shank had 9, Emerson Cross had 8, Lane Petersen had 6, Mason Elhard had 5 and Noah Price had 4.

Seward girls 36, Lumen Christi 21

On the girls side of the Southern Conference, the Seahawks will enter the favorite after winning at Lumen to improve to 6-0 in the league. With 21 straight wins, Seward is 21-2.

Homer girls 52, Houston 31

The host Mariners finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak to move to 6-17 overall.

Channing Lowney led the way for Homer with 21, while Stella Condon had 10, Keagan Niebuhr had 9, Abby Ostrom had 6, and Mally Im and Madalyn Miotke had 3.

For Houston, Sarah Bodfish had 11, Tricity Curren had 7, TaNea Cook had 6, Danyel Loyd had 4 and Chanelle Curren had 3.

Houston boys 70, Homer 61

The host Mariners dropped to 8-12 with the nonconference loss.

Spencer Dye knocked down six 3-pointers for 21 to lead Homer, while Henry Wedvik had 9, Einar Pederson had 8, Preston Stanislaw had 6, Ben Engebretsen had 5, and Justus Grimes, Parker Overson and Jamen Anderson had 4.

For the Hawks, Noah Whitted had 21, Blake Baskett had 13, Billy Rusher and Nate Davies had 12, Terje McClurg and Koko Sue had 4, and Sebastian Sanford and Aidan McDonnell had 2.

Palmer girls 43, Soldotna 28

The visiting Moose notched a victory to drop the Stars to 2-8 in the Northern Lights Conference and 10-14 overall.

Anaulie Sedivy had 11 to pace SoHi, while Brooke Walters and Alyssa McDonald had 3, Grayson Henry, Anika Jedlicka, Juliet Innes, Cassidy Kruse and Teagan Kobylarz had 2, and Laurel Johnson had 1.

For Palmer, Presley Wright had 13, Addy Wilson had 9, Jasmine Hephner had 8, Lillian Muilenburg had 5, Grace Muilenburg had 4, and Mariah Bothwell and Kaelyn Downey had 2.

Palmer boys 66, Soldotna 35

The Moose avenged a Friday loss at SoHi by dropping the Stars to 3-9 in the NLC and 8-16 overall.

Easton Hawkins had 13 to lead the Stars, while Bryan Berg had 6, Izaiah Gilbert had 5, Josh Babcock, Damari Adams and Kenai Lepule had 3, and Theo Huff had 2.

For Palmer, Nolan Garner had 18, Logan Rolston had 12, Lukas Owen had 9, KJ Henry had 7, Maddox Moore had 6, Logan McCann, Cooper Sparrow, Logan Johnson and Truman Dean had 3, and Corbin Gerkin had 2.

Nikiski girls 60, Redington 12

The host Bulldogs finished up the regular season with a nonconference victory to move their record to 8-15 overall.

Blakeley Jorgensen pumped in 19 to pace the Bulldogs, while Avery Ellis had 15, Abby White had 12, Kailey Stynsberg had 10 and Madison Iyatunguk had 4.

For Redington, Abi Dagomos had 10 and Janessa Gubler pitched in 2.

Redington boys 54, Nikiski 19

The visiting Huskies notched a nonconference victory to drop the Bulldogs to 1-20 overall.

Kameron Bird paced Nikiski with 7, while Carter Eiter had 6, Kaleb Allen had 3, Dylan Hall had 2 and Ryder Maguire had 1.

For the Huskies, Kaedon Saxton had 18, Christian Ingraham had 9, Christian Marquez-Hopson had 8, Jake Murdock had 6, Silas Conner and Natan Fields had 5, and Preston Metcalf had 3.
