Saturday hockey: Stars tie, Kardinals lose

The Soldotna hockey team finished up the Stars and Stripes Showdown in Palmer on Saturday with a tie, while Kenai finished up with a loss.

West won the tournament. SoHi finished with a win and two ties, while Kenai finished with a win and two losses.

Logan Mese, Avery Martin and Evyn Witt were players of the game for Kenai, while Brycen Clyde, Marshall DeRaeve and Noah Crabtree were players of the game for Soldotna.

Soldotna 3, West Valley 3

The Division II Stars came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to earn a tie with the Division I Wolfpack.

SoHi coach Anthony Zurfluh wrote in a text message that the Wolfpack are a big team. Watching warmups, Zurfluh thought his squad could be in trouble.

With 8:13 left in the game, Spencer Stellrecht put West Valley up 3-1.

With 4:09 left, DeRaeve pocketed a power-play goal for Soldotna. Less than a minute later, Crabtree lit the lamp and the game was tied.

Clyde had 31 saves for the Stars, while Jace Burnett stopped 17 for Wasilla.

In the first period, Bryson Roon had a goal for West Valley, while Daniel Heath, who also had two assists, scored for the Stars. Roon had the lone goal of the second period.

Wasilla 2, Kenai 1

The Kardinals, a Division II squad, took a tight loss to the Division I Warriors.

Chase Malstrom put Wasilla up 1-0 after the first period on a power-play goal.

Mese tied it up with the lone goal of the second period when he scored short-handed and unassisted.

With 12:26 left in the game, Simon Giani notched the game-winner for the Warriors.

Carson Branholm stopped 16 pucks for Wasilla, while Witt had 30 saves for the Kardinals.
