Saturday baseball: Kenai beats Grace; SoHi splits in league play

The Kenai Central baseball team toppled Grace Christian 13-2 in Northern Lights Conference play Saturday.

The Kardinals improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the league.

The game went five innings, with Kenai leading 6-0 after one inning, 8-0 after two, 12-0 after three and 13-0 after four.

Braden Smith pitched four scoreless innings for the Kards, giving up two hits while walking none and striking out nine. Jackson Marion gave up two runs in an inning on four hits.

Gabe Smith was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Braden Smith was 2 for 3 with two runs, Kaloni Beddow was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, Gabe Joanis was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Zane Pellegrom was 2 for 3, and Daniel Steffensen had two runs.

Palmer 15, Soldotna 13; Soldotna 16, Kodiak 1

The Stars are 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the league after splitting a pair of Northern Lights Conference games Saturday at the Soldotna Little League fields.

In the loss to Palmer, the Moose went into the seventh trailing 13-4 and stunned the Stars with 11 runs.

Colby Sturman gave up four runs — none earned — in 4 2-3 innings for the Stars, while Brenden Theel gave up six runs — five earned — in 1 2-3 innings, and Andrew Pieh yielded five runs — one earned — in two-thirds of an inning.

Wyatt Gagnon was 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs for SoHi, while Trenton Ohnemus was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, Theel had two RBIs, Pieh was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, Derrick Jones had two runs, and Matthew Schilling had two runs.

The 16-1 victory over Kodiak lasted four innings.

Jones went all four, giving up an unearned run on two hits while walking three and striking out six.

Gagnon was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, Schilling had three runs and two RBIs, Jones had two runs, Pieh had three runs, and Easton Hawkins was 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBIs, and Brett Hostetler scored two runs.

Sports briefs: Soldotna hockey, wrestling teams secure wins at weekend tournaments

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
