Peninsula volleyball teams seek state berths

The five Kenai Peninsula volleyball teams will seek state berths at conference tournaments.

Kenai Central, Nikiski, Homer and Seward will play in the Southcentral Conference tournament today, Friday and Saturday at Kenai Central High School, while Soldotna will play in the Northern Lights Conference tournament today, Friday and Saturday at Wasilla High School.

At the Southcentral Conference tournament, the top two teams automatically go to the Class 3A state tournament. The third-place team is eligible for an at-large berth.

Kenai Central comes in as the top seed out of the Southern Division and the defending conference champ. The Kardinals are looking for a third straight trip to the state tournament. Kenai finished runner-up at state in 2019 and 2021, while 2020 did not see a state tournament due to the pandemic.

Homer is the second seed out of the south. The Mariners can go to state for the fourth straight season. Homer won the state title in 2019.

Nikiski is the third seed out of the south. The Bulldogs are looking for their first trip to state since 2019.

Seward is the fourth seed out of the south. The Seahawks are looking for a repeat berth after earning the at-large berth last season.

At the Northern Lights Conference tournament, teams must finish in the top two to earn a Class 4A state berth. Soldotna, the fourth seed in the five-team tournament, will be seeking its first state berth since 2018.
