Former Ninilchik wrestler Austin Vanderford has found a successful groove in pro mix martial arts with win in the MMA Tuesday Night Contender Series.
Vanderford, a 28-year-old Ninilchik fighter who won two state championships and a NAIA national title in wrestling, beat Angelo Trevino with a rear-naked chokehold in his contest and forced Trevino to tap out for the win.
UFC owner Dana White created the Contender Series to help scout out talent for the big show, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which White also owns.
Vanderford currently trains with Grace Barra Portland in Oregon, and competes in the welterweight class.
