Kenai, Homer hockey lose to open tourney

The Kenai Central and Homer hockey teams both opened the End of the Road Tournament at Kevin Bell Arena in Homer with losses Thursday.

The Kardinals lost to West 8-1, while the Mariners fell 3-2 in overtime to Wasilla.

The tournament continues today when Kenai plays Wasilla at 5 p.m. and Homer plays West at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, West and Wasilla play at 10 a.m., while Homer and Kenai play at 12:30 p.m.

West 8, Kenai Central 1

The Division I Eagles received a hat trick from Iam Keim in defeating the Division II Kards. Kenai is now 4-4 overall.

West also received goals from Jacob James, Oliver Circosta, Aiden Fitzgerald, Evan Fitzgerald and Aaron James. Aaron James also had four assists.

With 12:47 left in the third period, Josiah Petty, assisted by Jacob Begich, scored to break up the shutout.

Chase Broady had 15 saves for the Eagles, while Carson Koppes stopped 36 for the Kardinals.

Wasilla 3, Homer 2

The Mariners, a Division II school, pushed the Warriors, a Division I school, all the way to overtime before falling to 3-4 overall this season.

With 2:36 left in overtime, Homer’s bench was called for a two-minute penalty. Wasilla took advantage when Roman Holler scored his second goal of the game with 1:47 left to play.

Holler scored unassisted about three minutes into the game to get the Warriors started, but Toby Nevak, assisted by Dylan Arno, scored on the power play with 9:00 left in the first period. Just before the close of the first, Haeden Dubie scored for Wasilla.

With 5:19 left in the third period, Matfey Reutov tied the game on an assist from Nevak.

Keegan Strong made 52 saves for the Mariners, while Phillip Brevogel stopped 21 for the Warriors.
