The Kenai Central girls hoops team could not quite catch a break this weekend, dropping a pair of close losses to Northern Lights Conference opponent Kodiak.

The Kards lost 28-22 on Friday, then dropped a 33-28 Saturday game to the defending 4A state champions.

Defense ruled the weekend, as neither side scored more than 11 points in a single quarter of action. Kodiak (2-0 NLC, 4-1 overall) managed to clinch both games with late free throws. Kenai dropped to 2-4 overall this season, and 0-2 in the NLC.

Hannah Drury led the Kards Saturday with five points, while Ali Steinbeck and Abby Beck both added four points each.

On Friday, Beck led Kenai in scoring nine points, while Hannah Barcus had five. Ila Hughes led Kodiak with 11 points.

Kenai will be off for over a week before facing Seward in an endowment game on Jan. 13, and will play its next conference game Jan. 23 against Colony.

Cordova goes 3 for 4 against Seward

The Cordova boys swept the Seward Seahawks in 3A hoops action, notching a 69-51 win on Friday and a 63-49 win Saturday.

On Friday, Cordova’s Jacob Werner led all players with 28 points on 11 shots. Seward was led by Alex Pahno with 12 points, while Ronnie Jackson and Michael Wolfe had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Pahno had an even bigger day on Saturday, scoring 21 points in the loss, but Werner once again topped that with 32 points.

The Seward girls split with Cordova, losing to the Wolverines 31-26 on Friday and winning 43-25 Saturday.

Jasmine Perea led the Seahawks with 14 points in Friday’s loss, then stepped up with 22 points in Saturday’s win.
