Kenai Central volleyball wins Lady Grizzly Invitational

The Kenai Central volleyball team won the Lady Grizzly Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Anchorage.

The Kardinals defeated Lathrop 18-20, 20-16 and 15-13 to secure the Platinum Bracket title.

Kenai’s Sophie Tapley was named the Offensive MVP for the tourney, while Kate Wisnewski of the Kardinals was the MVP Setter. Colony’s Maria Bunch was MVP Defense.

Tapley, Wisnewski and Stella Selanoff made all-tournament for the Kards. For Seward, Jordan Hartman, Kyana Huthinson and Mikinley Williams made the all-tournament team.

Channing Lowney made all-tourney for Homer, while Sadie Lane represented Soldotna and Ashlynne Playle represented Nikiski.

The Kards started in the Platinum Bracket by defeating Soldotna 20-9, 20-10, then beat Colony 20-11, 20-15, then sent Lathrop to the playback bracket with a 20-15, 20-15 win.

Nikiski was fourth in the Platinum Bracket, topping Palmer 20-14, 12-20, 15-10, losing to Lathrop 20-17, 8-20, 15-8, defeating Soldotna 20-13, 20-14 and losing to Palmer 20-16, 20-10, 13-11.

Soldotna tied for fifth in the Platinum Bracket, losing to Kenai, then losing to Nikiski.

Homer tied for fifth in the Gold Bracket, losing to Valdez 20-14, 20-9, then losing to Barrow 20-10, 20-17.

Seward won the Silver Bracket, beating Cordova 20-13, 20-6, beating Kodiak 17-20, 20-18, 14-10, then beating Kodiak again 20-14, 19-21, 16-14.

The brackets were seeded by Friday and Saturday pool play.

Nikiski and Soldotna both finished 6-2 in Pool A, while Seward was 3-5.

Nikiski lost to Mountain City Christian Academy 25-20, beat Cordova 25-7, beat Barrow 25-14, beat Valdez 25-16, beat Mt. Edgecumbe 25-13, beat Seward 25-17, lost to Colony 25-17 and beat Soldotna 25-21.

Soldotna beat Barrow 25-14, beat Mt. Edgecumbe 25-19, beat MCCA 25-23, lost to Colony 25-18, beat Valdez 25-22, beat Seward 25-13, beat Cordova 25-16 and lost to Nikiski.

Seward lost to Valdez 25-16, lost to MCCA 25-15, beat Cordova 25-16, beat Barrow 25-18, lost to Nikiski, beat Mt. Edgecumbe 25-23, lost to Soldotna and lost to Colony 27-25.

Kenai was 6-2 in Pool B, while Homer was 3-5.

Kenai lost to Sitka 25-21, beat Houston 25-7, beat Palmer 25-23, beat Homer 25-8, beat Kodiak 25-13, beat Monroe Catholic 25-11, beat Grace Christian 25-17 and lost to Lathrop 25-22.

Homer lost to Monroe Catholic 25-21, lost to Lathrop 25-21, beat Grace 25-17, lost to Kenai, lost to Sitka 25-15, beat Kodiak 25-23, beat Houston 25-13 and lost to Palmer 25-14.
