Ice racing report: Time to honor the old-timers

Slipping and sliding, bumping and rubbing. That is what it’s all about on the track with the Kenai Peninsula Ice Racers Association. The racers gather every Sunday at the Decanter Inn at Mile 107 of the Sterling Highway from noon to around 4 p.m. for some incredible ice racing.

They have anywhere from 12 to 15 vehicles individually owned and raced by men, women and teens. The vehicles are various sizes all wrapped in protective bars for safety and driven by racers of various skill levels.

This is some great family entertainment and a chance to get out and enjoy the great Alaska outdoors. Watch from trackside or from inside the Decanter Inn, where it is warm and comfortable.

Sunday at noon, the Decanter Inn will be hosting the Memorial Races and Old-Timers Race.

This will be a lot of fun to watch. Hot Dog A-la-Carte will be there to help with your lunch or dinner hunger and the racers will be there at their best. We will be celebrating the old-timers who put time, energy and effort into this sport and kept it going all these years.

This last week brought some real exciting races and some pretty good pileups on the track. Congratulations to Dallas Greenway (#99) for taking his first checkered flag of the season in the men’s second heat with Max Harris (#03) taking it in the first heat. The men’s main event was taken home by Dennis Ziemke (#19). Frank Armstrong (#31) took a win for the trophy dash. Sissy Bird (#99) jumped out front in the pitman’s race and stayed there for a checkered. Way to go Bird!!

The ladies also had some great excitement on the track. Amber Self (#31) took the checkered in the women’s first heat, Faith Link (#21) (Go 21!!!) took the women’s second heat and the Colette Krause (#82) held her line and won the women’s main event.

The afternoon teen race checkered goes to Jack Hatten (#31). The grand finale is the Australian race which is single file, you get passed you are out of the race. These drivers are top-notch and out for the win. Congratulations to Ralph Mills (#06) for this week’s awesome win.

Congratulations to all the drivers. I would not only like to congratulate the winners but also those who show up and participate. You all make this sport what it is.

If you are looking for some family fun on Sunday afternoon come check us out. The Decanter Inn, Mile 107 on the Sterling Highway at noon.
