Hoops roundup: Homer boys topple Seward

The visiting Homer boys basketball team used a strong second half to topple the Seahawks on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Mariners move to 13-3 and 3-1 against Seward. The Seahawks fall to 10-6.

The game was a tale of two halves, with Homer losing the first half 20-8 and winning the second half 31-12.

River Mann had 10 points to lead the Mariners, while Sam Koster and Trey Ingalls each had seven for the Seahawks.

Seward girls 29, Homer 12

The host Seahawks pitched an impressive Saturday defensive performance to close out the regular season against the Mariners.

Seward finishes 6-10, but has won four of its last six. The Seahawks lost their first two games against Homer, but have won the last two. The Mariners are 9-7.

The Seahawks trailed 6-2 after the first quarter, but Homer would score just six points the rest of the game.

Shelby Sieminski had 16 points to pace the Seahawks, while Hannah Schilling pitched in eight. For Homer, Laura Inama had six.

Lumen Christi boys 63, Ninilchik 54

The visiting Archangels snapped the winning streak of the Wolverines at 12 on Saturday.

Ninilchik had not lost since its season opener on Jan. 22. The Wolverines scored 70 or more points in 10 of their 12 wins, but Lumen Christi was able to slow the scoring machine.

The Archangels jumped out to a 20-16 lead after the first quarter and 33-27 lead at halftime. Lumen then led 49-38 heading into the final quarter.

Tim Bennett had 25 points for the Archangels, with six 3-pointers. Robert Wilcox added 16, while Brenden Gregory had 11.

For Ninilchik, Jaylin Scott had 16, Landon Colburn had 14, George Nelson had 13, Brandon Ducker had seven and Tom Nelson had four.

The Lumen girls also won at Ninilchik, dropping the Wolverines to 4-8.

Palmer girls 58, Soldotna 31

The visiting Stars finished 0-3 on a road trip to the Matanuska-Susitna valleys to fall to 14-3.

Palmer was in control throughout Saturday, leading 11-4 after a quarter, 22-13 at the half and 40-23 after three quarters.

Kinzey Hutchings and Kylie Henry had 12 for Palmer, while Paige Marshall had 10 and Grace Pickett had nine.

For the Stars, Drysta Crosby-Schneider had seven.

Soldotna head coach Kyle McFall said via text message that the story of the game was turnovers.

“We just turned the ball over too much and didn’t do a good job of getting back in transition,” McFall said. “Now we need to regroup and get ready for the region tourney.”

Palmer boys 57, Soldotna 56

The visiting Stars were nipped by the Moose on Saturday to finish a road trip to the Valley at 0-3. SoHi falls to 3-14.

Palmer led 17-12 after the first quarter, but SoHi cut it to 30-27 at the half. Palmer led 43-37 heading into the final eight minutes and was able to hold on.

Shea Halbert and Tyler Hansen paced the Moose with 11 points apiece. For the Stars, Ethan Sewell had 20 points, while Nate Johnson added 10.

Wasilla girls 45, Soldotna 34

The host Warriors jumped out to a Friday fast start and the Stars never caught up in falling to 14-2.

Wasilla led 19-10 after the first quarter.

“Wasilla jumped on us,” Soldotna head coach Kyle McFall said in a text message. “We eventually got back into it, getting to within 6 in the second half, but ultimately we couldn’t complete the comeback.”

Bella Hayes was a big problem for the Stars, scoring 22 points, including in the pivotal first quarter.

McFall said Taylor Edwards and Jolie Widaman played solid games off the bench, with Edwards helping slow down Hayes after the hot start. The coach also said Ellie Burns, with 11 points, had her best game of the season. Drysta Crosby-Schneider paced the Stars with 15 points.

Josie Sheridan was out again with an injury. McFall said the hope is she will be in practice next week.

Wasilla boys 52, Soldotna 32

The visiting Stars fell to 3-13 with a Friday loss to the Warriors.

Soldotna was able to stick with the Warriors for eight minutes, trailing 18-16. Wasilla then led 27-18 at the half and 39-25 after three quarters.

Ethan Sewell had 14 points to pace the Stars.

CIA boys 52, Grace JV 43

The Eagles boys moved to 6-4 on the season by defeating Grace Christian’s junior varsity Friday in a game played in the Matanuska-Susitna valleys.

Cook Inlet Academy took a 13-10 lead after a quarter, 23-13 lead at halftime and 36-27 lead after three quarters.

Cole Moore led the way for the Eagles with 24 points, while Ethan Boyd had eight, Isaac Johnson had six, Grizzly Beard had five, and Austin Matheson and James Boyd had four apiece.

Grace JV girls 54, CIA 29

The Eagles fell to 2-7 with a loss to Grace Christian’s junior varsity in the Matanuska-Susitna valleys Friday.

The Grizzlies grabbed a 10-6 lead after a quarter and a 24-9 lead at the break. Grace then led 42-20 with eight minutes left in the game.

Sophie Lenftfer had 21 point to lead the Grizzlies, while Ella Boerger had 19.

For the Eagles, Hope Hillyer led the way with 11 points, while Riley Tucker had eight, Victoria Duggan and Kaitlyn Liles had four apiece, and Sierra Moffis pitched in two.
