The host Kenai Central and Nikiski basketball teams split Peninsula Conference games Friday.
The Nikiski girls defeated Kenai 46-30 to improve to 1-2 in the league and 4-10 overall and drop the Kards to 2-2 and 11-7. Kenai had defeated Nikiski 52-40 in early January.
Madison Iyatunguk got free for 17 points for the Bulldogs, while Abby White added 16. Also, Blakeley Jorgensen and Kailey Stynsberg had 5, and Avery Ellis had 3.
For Kenai, Makenzie Spence had 8, Ellsi Miller had 7, Bryleigh Williams had 4, Sierra Hershbeger, Gracee Every and Jenica Andersen had 3, and Willow Graham had 2.
The Kenai boys won 81-42 to move to 2-1 in the Peninsula Conference and 12-6 overall with a seventh straight win. Nikiski fell to 0-2 and 0-13.
For Nikiski, Kameron Bird had 15, Carter Eiter had 11, Lynn Deveer had 7, Dylan Hall had 3, Kevin Love and Kaleb Allen had 2, and Wyatt Maguire and Ryder Maguire had 1.
For the Kards, Reid Titus hit six 3-pointers for 20 and Carter Felchle hit five 3-pointers for 17. Also, Miles Metteer had 16, Caleb Litke had 12, Ben Harris had 8, Riel Castillo had 4, and Garrett McCanna and Carson Cramer had 2.
Homer Winter Carnival
Bethel’s Madden Cockroft hit a buzzer beater from the far side of the jump ball circle at midcourt to give the Warriors a 66-63 victory over the Mariners on Friday at the Winter Carnival.
With 3.9 seconds left, Homer’s Henry Wedvik hit a free throw to tie it. Cockroft got the inbounds pass, took a few dribbles and let fly for his 24th point of the game.
For Homer, Spencer Dye and Ben Engebretsen had 21, while Einar Pederson had 9, Preston Stanislaw had 7 and Henry Wedvik had 5. The Mariners are 4-9.
Also for Bethel, Kenneth Fox had 23, Jackson Iverson had 8, Ethan Wheeler had 7, and Keegan Thompson and Mason Beolin had 2.
The Homer girls lost to Bethel 50-34 to fall to 3-12 overall.
For Homer, Channing Lowney had 14, Keagan Niebuhr had 11, Abby Ostrom had 4, Stella Condon had 2, and Lily Harris, Kieryn Huffman and Madalyn Miotke had 1.
For Bethel, Briella Herron had 19, Malinda Simon had 13, Ashlynn Lonewolf had 4, Julia Andrew had 3, and Hannah Leinborger and Maelynn Fredricks had 2.
The Seward girls defeated Kodiak 61-19 to win for a 12th straight time and improve to 12-2.
For Seward, Lia Shank had 17, Grace Fleming had 16, Natalie Sieminski had 10, Sevin Phillips had 6, Ava Jagielski and Mikinley Williams had 4, and Pamela Hillstad and Regan Seibert had 2.
The Ninilchik boys defeated Seward 56-50 to move to 3-2 in the Southern Conference and 10-7 overall, while the Seahawks fell to 2-1 in the league and 6-8 overall.
Kade McCorison had 32 points to lead the Wolverines, while Andon McCorison had 13, Onyx Allen had 6 and Brandt Mill had 5.
For Seward, Mason Elhard had 11, Noah Price and Talon Lemme had 10, Lane Petersen had 8, Emerson Cross had 6 and Van Shank had 5.
The tourney finishes Saturday with the Seward girls able to wrap up the title with a win over Homer at 3 p.m. The Bethel and Kodiak girls play at noon.
The Homer, Ninilchik and Bethel boys all have a loss in the tournament. The Ninilchik and Bethel boys play at 1:30 p.m., while the Seward and Homer boys play at 4:30 p.m.
Nenana Invitational Tournament
The Cook Inlet Academy boys reached the final with a 71-61 victory against previously unbeaten Effie Kokrine. The Eagles improved to 14-4.
When the power went out in Nenana, the game was moved to Tri-Valley in Healy.
CIA head coach Ben McGarry wrote his team led by 15 at the half, but Effie Kokrine cut it to 1 in the third quarter.
“We played a great fourth quarter and finished well,” McGarry wrote. “Great prep game for state.”
CIA will play the winner of Susitna Valley and Nunamiut for the title. Those two don’t play until Saturday due to the power outage.
For CIA, Alek McGarry had 31, Ian McGarry had 22, Brandt Rollman had 7, Lucas Oyoumick had 6, Owen Braband had 3 and Matthew Phillips had 2.
For Effie Kokrine, Jonas Carroll had 34 and Esai Joseph had 13 to lead the way.
Also Friday, the CIA girls defeated Effie Kokrine 40-16.
For the Eagles, Ella Rollman pumped in 23, while Madison Curren had 8, Beka Dillingham had 5, and Kristi Stoll and Sophie Rozak had 2.
The Eagles play Northway for fourth place Saturday.
