The visiting Kenai Central baseball team picked up a split in a season-opening series against Kodiak by winning 9-3 on Friday.
The Kardinals are 1-1 in the league and 1-1 overall.
Jacob Joanis went five strong innings to pick up the victory. He allowed an unearned run on two hits while walking two and striking out 10.
Brandon Blake then gave up two runs without retiring a batter, but Gabe Joanis came on with two scoreless innings to preserve the win. Gabe gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two.
Jacob Joanis helped himself by going 1 for 2 with two walks, three runs and an RBI. Everett Chamberlain also had a big game, going 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs.
Also, Braden Smith scored two runs and Blake Morris had two RBIs.
Homer 11, North Pole 3
The Mariners improved to 5-1 overall with a nonconference victory over the Patriots at Wasilla.
Homer was down 3-2 entering the bottom of the third inning, but scored seven runs there to take control of the game.
Henry Wedvik went six innings, giving up three runs — two earned — on six hits while walking two and striking out eight.
Jayden Sims finished with a scoreless inning, allowing two hits while striking out one.
Sims went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI at the plate, while Cohen Boyd had a hit, an RBI and three runs.
Also, Jamen Anderson had two RBIs and Weston Marley had two RBIs.
