Brown Bears compete at Top Prospects

Six members of the Kenai River Brown Bears played for the Midwest Division at the 2021 North American Hockey League Top Prospects Tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Blaine, Minnesota.

Competing were defenseman Adam Szubert, forward Lucas Wahlin, forward Jake Veri, forward David Vieten, forward Peter Morgan and forward Brandon Lajoie, who is from Eagle River.

According to the NAHL, hundreds of NHL and NCAA scouts attend the event to scout players not committed to college and some potential NHL Draft picks.

Saturday, Team Midwest took a 5-3 loss to Team Central, which would go on to win the tournament Sunday. Vieten had a goal in the game, while Szubert, Wahlin and Lajoie all had assists.

Sunday, Team Midwest took a 7-2 loss to Team South. Wahlin and Lajoie both had assists in the game.

Tuesday, the NAHL wrapped up its season with the Shreveport (Louisiana) Mudbugs topping the Aberdeen (South Dakota) Wings 3-2 in Blaine for the Robertson Cup championship. The Mudbugs win their second title, with the first coming in 2018, while the Wings fail to defend the crown they wore in 2019.
