Race No. 9 of the Freezer Food Series of winter races challenged 12 skiers Wednesday night in an unorthodox ski race at the Tsalteshi Ski Trails.

The three-mile race, which gave out bonus points to those who used the classic technique, included three laps of the Beaver Loop. Each lap of Beaver required skiers to use the herringbone style of climbing up the large uphill that punctuates the end of the loop.

Joey Klecka came out on top in a time of 19 minutes, 30 seconds, beating runner-up and women’s winner Kailey Mucha to the line by 1:46. Jordan Chilson finished third in 21:50 and John Pothast took fourth in 22:18, while Morgan Aldridge crossed in 22:40 as the women’s runner-up.

The 10-race series wraps up next Wednesday at 6 p.m. with a micro triathlon event that includes skiing, biking and running on the new Slikok trail system. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.
