A group of 12 volleyball teams were whittled down to eight Thursday at the Mixed Six State Championships at Dimond High School.

Among the eight coed teams that made it to the championship bracket were the Nikolaevsk Warriors, who finished their three-team pool Thursday with a split. The Warriors defeated Hoonah 2-0 to start the day, winning with scores of 25-22 and 25-22.

Later in the day, Nikolaevsk lost to Noatak 2-0 with scores of 25-13 and 25-11.

“The kids didn’t play as well as they could against Noatak, but hopefully tomorrow they come back ready to go,” said Nikolaevsk coach Bea Klaich.

Nikolaevsk will start Friday with a 1:30 p.m. quarterfinal match against Kodiak ESS.

Klaich praised the play of setter Vera Fefelov, who had a stout passing game.
