The Soldotna Police Department is warning people to hang up the phone in light of a new scam circulating the area.
Members of the public have been receiving phone calls where the caller claims to be a law enforcement officer. The caller will then inform the person that there is a warrant out for their arrest that can be cleared if they send money, according to a release from the Soldotna Police Department.
“From what I understand, it shows a number on the caller ID that is from a police agency,” said Soldotna Police Chief Peter Mlynarik.
The release warns the public to be aware that law enforcement agencies in Alaska do not solicit payment over the phone and all monetary issues are handled through the Alaska Court System.
“If you receive a call from a person regarding warrants and requesting money, do not comply,” the release states. “Hang up, and contact local law enforcement or the Alaska State Troopers.”
Since publicizing the release on Nov. 28, Chief Mylnarik said there have not been any more reports.
