Man dies after being shot by Seward police officer

A man has died after being shot by a Seward police officer during a confrontation Sunday.

A Seward police officer shot Micah McComas, 41, of Chugiak, during a confrontation after a traffic stop around 1:47 a.m., according to an online Alaska State Trooper dispatch. McComas later died of the gunshot wound and the police officer received non-life threatening injuries during the incident, according to the dispatch.

The Seward Police Department requested Alaska State Trooper aid to investigate the incident, and an investigator from Soldotna along with troopers from Soldotna and Seward responded to investigate and to assist with scene security and documentation, according to the dispatch.

The troopers have assumed case responsibility to investigate, and the Office of Special Prosecutions will decide whether charges are appropriate after the investigation and reports are complete, according to the dispatch.
