The Kenai City Council on Wednesday accepted nearly $14,000 in donations to the Kenai Community Library to purchase new materials, equipment and furniture.
The bulk of the donations, Kenai Library Director Katja Wolfe told the council, come from a $10,000 donation by Deborah McCarthy, the third such donation by McCarthy in the last three years. McCarthy has made similar donations in the past three years to Soldotna’s library. Other funds accepted Wednesday come from the Friends of the Kenai Community Library and other individual donors.
A memo by Wolfe, included with an ordinance enacted unanimously during the meeting, says that the funds will be used to expand the library’s collection of physical and digital media; to add new shelving to accommodate the growing collection; to install new signage; to purchase new equipment supporting literacy in young readers; and to support library initiatives like the upcoming Summer Reading Program.
“I think I can speak for council when say thank you to all those individuals,” Mayor Brian Gabriel said during the meeting. “That goes to improving our library and the services — much appreciated.”
The ordinance was enacted with no other deliberation.
