A Little About Cannabinoids

Let’s talk about the ins and outs of cannabinoids, how they work in the body, and why you might choose to use them. You can find cannabinoids in multiple places throughout nature, but phytocannabinoids and endocannabinoids are the most important to know for our purposes.

There are actually more than 100 known phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Phytocannabinoids are molecules derived from the hemp plant and are different from endocannabinoids found naturally in the human body.

The phytocannabinoids you see in today’s market come from one of three main species of the cannabis plant: cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. The three cannabis species differ based on where they naturally grow and the proportions of cannabinoids in each plant. This is why some individuals will say that they use a cannabis sativa variety of plants to produce one effect and a cannabis indica variety of plants to produce another.

The human body also produces cannabinoids. It has an endocannabinoid system composed of endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. Without our natural machinery for endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids would not produce any effect on the human body.

The endocannabinoid system of our body plays a role in our immune system function, pain regulation, and mood. This is an essential system that can play a huge role in how you feel both mentallly and physically.

While there are over 100 known phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant, there are three main cannabinoids humans use: cannabidiol (CBD), Delta 9 THC, and Delta 8 THC. We’ll offer a closer look at each of these below.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

Some will argue that Delta 9 THC started the cannabinoid movement we’re seeing today, but it was cannabidiol that everyone started to watch after the 2018 Farm Bill passed. Now, cannabidiol can be legally used for addressing pain concerns, anxiety, and other health issues.

Cannabidiol is derived from the hemp plant. Its products are typically broken down into three types: full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is a product that contains pure cannabidiol without the addition of other cannabinoids. This is a highly refined product that removes other cannabinoids during the manufacturing process. Some individuals want to stick with a pure CBD isolate, as it has the most research backing it. There’s even an FDA-approved drug formulated containing CBD isolate, which is used to treat certain childhood seizure disorders.

Broad-spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD contains all the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant except Delta 9 THC, which is purposely removed from broad-spectrum products. Individuals who choose a broad-spectrum CBD product do so because they want the benefits of other cannabinoids while entirely avoiding Delta 9 THC.

Full-spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD products have all the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant including less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. Many individuals choose a full-spectrum CBD product because they believe that the cannabinoids within the cannabis plant help reinforce the activity and effects of other cannabinoids and can produce enhanced benefits. This is called the entourage effect.

The downside to using a full-spectrum THC product is that full-spectrum CBD users have a risk of testing positive for THC on a urinary drug screen test. Individuals that work high-profile jobs or that have a strict no-drug use policy may want to avoid full-spectrum CBD products for this risk.

Delta-9 THC

Delta 9 THC is a molecule with a notorious past. It’s responsible for getting people “ high.” It can be found in the hemp plant in quantities less than 0.3% and in the marijuana plant. It’s also the molecule in cannabis that’s explicitly illegal at the federal level. However, many states allow the use of Delta 9 THC; you just can’t take it to a state where it’s illegal, on an airplane, across country borders, etc.

Delta 9 THC has been used medically to help with weight gain, intractable nausea and vomiting, high pressure within the eyeball, and various other medical concerns. It’s also believed to help with emotional and mental health problems including anxiety.

Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC only differs from Delta 9 by the placement of one double bond. In chemistry, the changing of one double bond can have huge implications on how it acts in the human body. For example, delta 8 THC has about half the potency as delta 9 THC, which means you’d have to take twice the amount of delta 8 THC for any given dose of delta 9 THC to feel a similar effect.

This decreased potency makes it an ideal molecule for those looking to try the effects of THC while minimizing the potential side effects of using D9 THC.

CB1 and CB2 Receptors

There are two primary types of cannabinoid receptors in the human body: CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. The CB1 receptor is found primarily in the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain and spinal cord, while the CB2 receptors are found primarily in the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is composed of all the nerves outside of the central nervous system.

For a molecule to have an effect on the body it has to interact with a receptor, so naturally, molecules that produce a mind-altering effect must interact with the CB1 receptor. Cannabinoids that don’t have a mind-altering effect primarily interact with the CB2 receptors. This means that THC primarily interacts with the CB1 receptors, while cannabinoids such a CBD primarily interacts with the CB2 receptors.

Of course, it’s not as cut-and-dry as this, but this is a good model to use when thinking of cannabinoids. And if you want to do a little more research, this basic information is a good jumping-off point.

State and Federal Laws

Federal and state laws can differ depending on where you live. This is especially true for the various cannabinoids. Knowing the various laws both at the state and federal level will tell you when and where you can use particular cannabinoids, and, more importantly, where you cannot take them.

The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized the commercialization and manufacture of hemp-derived products such as cannabinoids as long as the products contain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. The Farm Bill did not mention Delta 8 THC as a prohibited substance.

The federal government classifies Delta 9 THC as a schedule one substance, which means the government doesn’t recognize a medical use for it, and that it’s illegal to possess and use.

Although Delta 9 THC is classified as a schedule one substance, there are pharmaceutical-grade THC drugs to treat specific medical conditions such as AIDs-related weight loss along with nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy. The drug is called Dronabinol.

The federal government’s stance on Delta 9 THC is clear, but individualized states have made their own laws regarding what the residents can and cannot do about Delta 9 THC use.

Some states have chosen to allow their residents to use Delta 9 THC recreationally without stipulations except for the amount that they can carry at any given time. Other states have legalized the use of medical marijuana for specific qualifying medical conditions, such as neurodegenerative disorders, chronic pain conditions, and other medical ailments. Still, other states have followed suit with the federal government and upheld the illegality of Delta 9 THC for its residents.

States have even taken a stance on other cannabinoids such as the type of cannabidiol that their residents can utilize, even though it’s legal at the federal level. Some states specify whether their residents can use full-spectrum CBD products, broad-spectrum CBD products, or CBD isolates.

More and more people use Delta 8 THC as a workaround for Delta 9 THC. But some states have specifically prohibited the use of Delta 8 THC.

Is Delta 8 Legal to Purchase in Texas?

Now that we have quite a bit of background into the legal state of cannabinoids throughout the U.S., it’s time to look at the laws surrounding Delta 8 THC in one state: Texas.

While we want to give you a “yes” or “no” answer, it’s a little more complicated than that. Here’s the story:

In October of 2021, the state of Texas made the selling and use of Delta 8 THC products illegal. But lawsuits started cropping up all over the giant state to fight this ruling. As a result, the courts temporarily reversed the ruling prohibiting the purchase and use of Delta 8 in November of 2021.

At the time of writing this article, it is legal to buy and use Delta 8 THC products in Texas. But keep checking back, just to make sure that ruling hasn’t changed!

Considerations When Buying Delta 8

Your body is a temple, as the saying goes. So it only makes sense to put pure, high-quality ingredients into your body when using supplements. The general rule for selecting high-quality supplements goes across the board, with many of the same criteria used whether you’re picking out a top-notch multivitamin or the best Delta 8 THC product available.

Some readers out there don’t have the time to sift through the many companies that have come into existence since the passage of the Farm Bill of 2018. For those, your best bet may be to skip this section and go to our top five Delta 8 THC products to try.

Others out there will want to know the process by which we chose our top five products and the selection criteria. In this section, we’ll break down the various criteria we use to select the highest quality Delta 8 THC products.

Laboratory Testing

One criterion you’d be wise not to discount is whether or not the company has independently tested their products with third-party laboratories. These tests should check the ingredients, particularly the Delta 8 ingredient, for potency and accuracy on the label. This is the bare minimum we expect from our top Delta 8 companies, but we love to see companies that also test for contaminants in the formulation.

While all cannabis companies should have each batch of their Delta 8 products third-party tested, not all do. Some cut corners to save a buck, and if you can’t see lab results on their website, it raises a red flag that the company hasn’t done its due diligence.

Real Customers

The experiences of real customers who use these products frequently is one of our best markers for gauging the product’s quality. It will also tell us a lot about the entire shopping experience, from browsing the website to working with customer service if there’s an issue.

We look for customer reviews that are detailed and explain both the pros and the cons of their experience.

Addressing Concerns

We look at how easy it is to get answers to questions that are not clearly explained on the company website. We also look at what happens when the customer experience is less than optimal. Does the company go the extra mile to make things right or do they avoid responsibility at all costs?

Website User Experience

How easy is it to navigate the company’s website? Are specific products easy to find? Is there a place to reach out to the company if you have questions? These are some of the questions we ask ourselves when we look at a cannabinoid company’s website.
