Events and Exhibitions

• The Klimpke Family will be flipping the switch on their annual Christmas Lights Display on Friday. Lights will be on from 5-10:30 p.m. from Dec. 1-Jan. 1. Santa will visit from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 20-23. Reindeer will accompany Santa from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 23. to find the Klimpke display, take the Kenai Spur Highway to South Miller Loop Road. Go past Holt-Lamplight to the second street on the right, then the fourth driveway on the right, 52825 Blueberry Avenue. For more information, call John at 398-3756.

The KPC Showcase presents “Science in Fiction: It’s not only science fiction” with author Nancy Lord at 6:30 p.m Dec. 7, in the McLane Commons at Kenai Peninsula College. In recent years we’ve seen a new emphasis in both mainstream and literary fiction, embracing scientists as characters and scientific concepts and practices in storytelling. This craft talk will examine specific examples of science in fiction and help us think about the pleasures and benefits of science-based storytelling. This will include readings from Nancy’s latest book, “pH: A Novel,” followed by Q&A and a book signing. Nancy Lord is former Alaska Writer Laureate. Among her published books are three collections of short stories and five works of literary nonfiction, including the memoir “Fishcamp,” the cautionary “Beluga Days,” and the front-lines story of climate change, “Early Warming.”

The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra presents “An Evening of Christmas,” Dec. 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the KCHS Renee C. Henderson Auditorium. This is a fun-filled evening full of holiday songs and audience sing-alongs. Performing groups include the Redoubt Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Tammy Vollom-Matturro, and the Kenai Peninsula Singers under the direction of Simon Nissen. The KCHS Jazz Band, under the direction of Deborah Sounart, will perform during intermission. Tickets are available at the door, $15 general admission, all youth 18 and under are free.

“Threads & Dots!” and “Olga’s Oils” are on display for the month of November at the Kobuk Kaladi’s Coffee Shop.

Coming in January 2018 to Kenai Fine Art Center is Art Teachers of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. The exhibition will open Jan. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m.

ARTspace Drawer is on display at the Soldotna Library, the first annual collection of locally created 2D art. The first of its kind in Alaska, this display is made possible by a partnership between Soldotna Rotary, ARTspace Inc., and the Soldotna Public Library.

 

Entertainment

The Vagabond Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road has live music with the Roy Mullin & Grady Nelson Show on Saturday at 9 p.m. This is a non-smoking show.

Veronica’s in Old Town Kenai has Open Mic from 6-8 p.m. Friday, and live music with The Fabulous Pepper Shakers on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Reservations encouraged. Call Veronica’s at 283-2725.

A bluegrass jam takes place on the first Sunday of the month at from 1-4 p.m. at the Mount Redoubt Baptist Church on South Lovers Loop in Nikiski.

The Flats Bistro on Kalifornsky Beach Road has live music with Daniel Tuttle Mondays from 6-8 p.m.; Pat Wendt on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m.; Garrett Mayer on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m.; and Robb Justice on Fridays from 8-10 p.m.

An all acoustic jam takes place every Thursday. The jam is at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna on the first Thursday of the month, and at the Kenai Senior Center during the rest of the month. Jam starts at 6:30 p.m.

AmVets Post 4 has reopened in its brand new building on Kalifornsky Beach across from Jumpin’ Junction. Eligible veterans and their families are invited to stop by to find out more about AmVets and their involvement in the Veteran community. For members and invited guests, Friday night dance to “Running with Scissors,” and Saturday Burn your own steak and karaoke with Cowboy Don.

Odie’s Deli in Soldotna has live music Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Pub Quiz night every Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

The Bow bar in Kenai has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays and live music Fridays, Saturdays at 10 p.m.

The Duck Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and DJ Arisen on Saturdays.
