Another Year
by Norm Olson
Get up now! You’ll be late!
It’s ten-past-seven and nearly eight!
You’ve got to brush! Make your bed!
Wear that yellow shirt instead!
Drink your milk! What a mess!
I’ll tell you again, “Not THAT dress!’
“Where’s my belt?” It’s on the floor,
Right where it’s always been before.
Chaos at sunrise, as a general rule,
Is the order of battle in going to school.
You push and you beg, you pull and you shout
‘Til the last of the children are finally out.
Then,
After they’ve gone, and the battleground clears
You find nothing has changed in the last 30 years.
