Brown Bears drop a pair

The host Fairbanks Ice Dogs defeated the Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday and Saturday in North American Hockey League action.

On Saturday, the Ice Dogs notched a 6-3 victory. Kegan Kiel, Doug Beck and Josh Royston scored for the Brown Bears, who are now 5-20-1.

The Ice Dogs buried four goals in the second period Friday, giving them too big a lead for Kenai River to come back from. The Brown Bears scored two goals in the third, but came up short, 5-2.

Fairbanks' Michael Juola recorded a goal and three assists in the Ice Dogs win.

After a scoreless opening period, Fairbanks' Kyle Polit scored the first goal of the game 1:35 into the second. James Saintey added two goals in the period and a Josh Nelson tally gave the Ice Dogs a 4-0 lead after two periods of play.

Brad Fusaro scored six minutes into the third period to cut the lead to three. But Juola scored with under five minutes to play to give his team an insurmountable lead. Just over a minute after Juola's goal, Ryan Townsend netted a power-play goal for the Brownies.

Goaltender Mike Martin let in four goals on 26 shots. He was pulled after the second period. Jimmy Hamby turned away 10 of 11 shots he faced in the third.
