SkyHi wrestlers defeat Kenai, Nikiski

Both Monica and Hannah Hutchison went for an arm bar, both executed the move and both won by pin Tuesday night as the Skyview wrestling team defeated visiting Nikiski, 43-24. The Panthers then handled Kenai Central, 60-15, in a dual immediately following their win over Nikiski.

"It was a good night for us," said Skyview head coach Neldon Gardner. "We're just happy with the way the kids are working."

The wins improve Skyview to 8-0 in the last five days. The Panthers won all six duals during the Skyview Invitational held Friday and Saturday.

Against Nikiski, Hannah, wrestling at 103 pounds, pinned her opponent just 33 seconds into the opening round.

"I took a shot and I got a good one," Hannah said after the match. "It just felt good."

At 119 pounds, Monica won by pin halfway through the second round. The key to her success was quick feet, Monica said.

"I was just moving my feet," she said. "Lately, I haven't been."

Quick feet forces a wrestler's hips out, which helps them clear their opponent, she said.

Monica was one of 12 Skyview seniors honored in between the duals.

At 125 pounds, Nikiski's Nathan Stangel got one of the Bulldogs' four pins on the night. Stangel pinned TJ Checketts at 5:30 in the third round.

"It was a difficult match," Stangel said. "He's a tough kid."

Stangel led 4-1 after one round. With just seconds remaining in the second, Stangel nearly pinned Checketts, but he fought it off until time expired. Leading 16-4 after two rounds, Stangel got the pin with 30 seconds left in the third.

"It was short time," Stangel said. "I held him as tight as I could."

Mike Eyre and Jake Tuttle had a hard-fought, low-scoring match at 189 pounds. The duo battled to a scoreless first round. After two rounds, Eyre led 4-2. Though Tuttle scored two points late in the final round, Eyre held on to win 5-4.

"There was a lot of real close matches," Gardner said. "I was real pleased with a good, solid dual."

Skyview cruised to an easy victory thanks in large part to five Kenai Central forfeits.

The Kards have several first-year wrestlers and freshmen who have been competing against more experienced wrestlers all season, said head coach Dave Boyle. He said he gave them a night off against Skyview.

Two female varsity wrestlers squared off when Kenai's Hope Steffensen took on Hannah Hutchison. It was a tight match. In the opening round, the lone takedown and two points went to Steffensen. She held a 5-2 lead after two rounds. Neither wrestler tallied a point in the final round and Steffensen earned three points for her team with the 5-2 decision.

"We've been looking forward to that," Boyle said about the match. "Two great wrestling families squaring off."

When experienced wrestlers grapple, it's often a conservative match, Boyle said.

"She kept it close," Gardner said about Hannah. "You can't ask for any more than Hannah gives you. She wrestles well."

The rest of the dual's matches were decided by pin fall or forfeit. Bryce Wilson, Austin Tennis, Jared Thomas, Steve Lawson and Nick VanBruggen all won by pin for Skyview. Adam Agosti and Dylan Sterling had pins for Kenai.
