Workforce opportunities offered
The skills learned at Workforce Development Center benefit students for part time jobs, long term careers, or simple hobbies. Classes are offered in building trades, welding fabrication& power mechanics. Online classes are offered in employability skills and drafting.
After School Construction Academies, funded by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development are on going throughout the school year and at no cost to the student. The Youth First Grant makes it possible to offer medical academies throughout the year as well. If a student successfully completes an academy they will also receive a half practical arts credit.
Transportation is provided to students from all schools for all of these programs. Scholarships offered
The Elks National Foundation in conjunction with the Alaska State Elks Association and local Elks Lodges are offering the Most Valuable Student scholarship for high school seniors. Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors through a local, state and national competition. The MVS scholarship is awarded based on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Copies of the application are available at local lodges or at www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.

School picture retakes are today at the Borough Building in the downstairs Assembly Chamber from 1-3 p.m.
Scholastic book orders are available in the Soldotna office. Deadline is the 15th of each month for orders brought into the office. Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
A lockdown drill was held at Kaleidoscope on Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. The drill was successful and will continue to be worked on with the staff and students throughout the year.
Last week all classes participated in classroom instruction by our local firemen on fire safety. Our younger students had the chance to go through the fire house to simulate a safe exit if they are ever in a building with fire.
A letter was sent home in the Friday folders last week to explain our Christmas Drive. If your family needs assistance this holiday season, please fill in the form provided and return it to the office by November 25. This is a firm deadline. These forms will be kept confidential. If you are able to help by donating money or buying for another child, please fill out the donation form and return that to the office as well. Miss Linda will be in touch with you to work out the details. We do not solicit funds from the community but rely on our generous Kaleidoscope families to make the Christmas Drive a success so we greatly appreciate your help.
There will be a PTA meeting today at 4 p.m. in the library. PTA Family Fun night will be held on Thursday.
The APC will be holding a special meeting on Thursday at 4 p.m. to vote on the budget for the 2010-2011 school year. Parents are encouraged to come and learn more about the budget.
Kalifonsky Beach Elementary
The World Music Concert with Laura Pelon is today. Schedule is as follows: 8:30-9:30 p.m.- 4th, 5th and 6th; and 9:30-10:30 - kindergarten, 1, 2 and 3.
Wednesday - The H1N1 clinic is coming to the school beginning at 8 and going through until finished at approximately noon.
Lunch will be in classrooms as the clinic will be held in the gym.
We will begin with kindergarten and work our way through each grade level.
Only students with signed permission forms on file in the nurse's office will be given the vaccination.
Melia Miller was our top seller for the Innisbrook fundraiser and won the large stuffed "tropical" bear!
Our primary musical is coming up on Dec. 15. Mr. Houglum is holding auditions during regular music classes. Students do not need to stay after school to audition.
Remember to continue sending in your Box Tops for Education. Each month the classrooms compete to collect the most box tops and earn a prize from Ms. Dowd. November's reward is an ice cream party.
Kenai Alternative High
Will begin its third rotation on Dec. 7. Students who wish to be considered for enrollment may call the school at 283-7844 to set up an interview time.
Kenai Central High
Thespians, playgoers, and movie buffs, the KCHS Drama club will be performing The Mouse that Roared Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 7, and Sunday at 3. Purchase your tickets today and be sure to catch this spectacular event.
Students will be able to utilize the study hall from 2:30 - 3:30, Monday - Thursday. This will be a time for students to work on homework and projects or make up work from absences. The NHS will also have tutors available for students who need help in a class. If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact Greta Cox in the counseling office.

Mountain View Elementary

The H1N1 Vaccine Clinic will be held on Tuesday from 9 - 11 a.m. Only students that have returned a signed consent form will receive the vaccine.

Nikiski North Star Elementary
A reminder that this morning we will be having our H1N1 vaccine clinic from approximately 9 a.m. until noon. Only students with signed permission slips will be vaccinated. Call the school at 776-2600 for more information.
Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Your child should be dressed in a warm jacket, a hat and gloves. Once the snow flies, they should have boots and snow pants. District policy states that all students will be out for recess until the temperature drops to below minus ten degrees. Please help your child remember their gear on these chilly days.
"Annie", the musical, will be performed at Nikiski High School this weekend. The show will be on Friday, and Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. each night. The cost is $5 per person or $20 a family.

Redoubt Elementary
Friday is the last day to contribute to Redoubt's holiday food drive and fundraiser for the Peninsula Food Bank. Students, parents, and community members can help by "purchasing" a turkey for $10, a pumpkin for $5, or an apple for $2 for our farm in the foyer. Non-perishable food items are needed also.
ABATE is donating 16 Thanksgiving dinners to the food bank for Redoubt families. Families who need help should contact the Peninsula Food Bank.
Last week's Big G Box Tops drawing winner was Logan Harmon.
Students go outdoors daily and should come to school dressed for the weather. Parents who need help acquiring winter outerwear for their children are asked to contact the school.
1st - 3rd graders present their holiday musical on Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Soldotna High School auditorium. All are invited.
The PTA is sponsoring its Holiday Kindness program. Families who need help this Christmas are asked to let Mr. Pothast know by Dec. 4. Names of families are kept confidential.
Skyview High
The wrestling team will host Nikiski Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Kenai Central at 6:30 p.m.

The final day for Can Wars is today. Student Council will be collecting items during Advisory. The class with the most items will receive a pizza party. We will use these items for Soldotna High School families in need. Extra items will be donated to the food bank.

Tustumena Elementary
Canned food drive runs through Dec. 16
The food drive to support The Salvation Army has a goal of 400 items. We actually exceeded that level last year and are confident we can again support his needed project. Students can bring their non-perishable items to their class where they will be counted and tracked for class competition.
Cash Raffle tickets on sale. Twenty dollars per ticket with 22 chances to win plus door prizes, $2,500.00 grand prize $100 cash prizes, $50 cash prizes, 8G I-Pod, Digital Camcorder, Farm Boss chainsaw
Stop by the school and get your tickets. Raffle will be held Dec. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. Must be 18 years old to enter.

Wings Christian Academy
Students are reminded to keep reading books for November's Book-It Reading goals.
The office of the week in the upper learning center is Mathew Grant.
The office of the week in the lower learning center is Joanna Grant.
Christmas program practices are on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. All lines must be memorized by Wednesday practice.
Students are asked to purchase a pair or a package of socks to give as gifts to the elders at the Tyotka Elder Center in Kenai. Socks should be wrapped and labeled as to whether they are for a man or a woman. Bring wrapped socks to the school by Dec. 2. This is in lieu of a student gift exchange.
On Dec. 4 students will be going to the Tyotka Elder Center to present our gifts, sing, serve food and eat lunch with the elders.
The Christmas program is at 7 p.m. on Dec. 10. There will be a 15 minute intermission during the program where there will be cookies and drinks available for one dollar. The proceeds for this will go to help students attend Internationals in May.
